Semantics at the Linguistic Levels in the Algerian Literary Heritage

Laboratory Director: Ahmed METAHRI

Description

The laboratory comprises four research teams:

**The First Team: Phonetic (or Phonosemantic) Signification**
The first team investigates phonetic signification, that is, the natural relationship between sound and meaning. Any sound—whether consonantal or vocalic, isolated or occurring within a sentence—constitutes an extremely subtle and delicate subject of inquiry. Reaching convincing results in this field is evidence of the authenticity of the language under study, its enduring vitality, and its perpetual youth. Unlike certain languages that have aged and given rise to numerous daughter languages—thereby losing many of the bonds that once connected roots and branches and widening the gap between them—we refer here specifically to the Arabic language, which we describe as possessing perpetual vitality. By contrast, some ancient European languages have fragmented into distinct languages, making it virtually impossible to investigate what is known as phonetic signification—that is, the natural relationship between sounds and their meanings—since such a relationship becomes more hypothetical than demonstrable. This may be explained by the fact that collective memory has lost contact with the mother language, as in the case of Greek language.

In contrast, Arabic has remained resilient, not transforming into mutually distant independent languages, but rather into dialects that remain governed by the same linguistic system, aside from certain deviations imposed by time and history. Given the importance of this type of signification and the possibility of researching it within our language, the laboratory has dedicated a full team to this endeavor. It bases its work on Algerian corpora, in fidelity to and revival of the national heritage, and in an attempt to uncover Algerian intellectual creativity and the ways in which it has employed phonetic signification to convey the profound meanings embedded in the depths of the writer’s consciousness to the recipients of literary creation.

**The Second Team: Morphological Signification**
The second team focuses on the study and analysis of the single-word morphological form in Algerian literary corpora. This field holds particular importance in Arabic linguistic studies and in linguistics more broadly. It concerns the form of the word, its original root material, its structural pattern, its morphological functions, and the semantic connotations generated by its material, structure, and varied usages—usages that have endowed it with multiple meanings.

Its research is divided into two dimensions: theoretical and applied. At the theoretical level, the team frames morphological signification within modern linguistic analysis by collecting and examining relevant studies and constructing a clear conceptual framework. At the applied level, it analyzes selected Algerian literary heritage corpora across different genres, guided by theoretical findings and employing modern linguistic tools and mechanisms. This contributes to reviving Algerian literary heritage, promoting its recognition, and connecting it to global linguistic thought. The team also surveys semantic–morphological studies within Algerian literary heritage by compiling, classifying, and analyzing their materials according to rigorous research methodology. Thus, the analysis of Algerian literary corpora proceeds through the study of individual word forms and their semantic implications within a methodological framework that harmonizes traditional Arabic linguistic scholarship with contemporary linguistic approaches.

**The Third Team: Syntactic Signification**
The third team works at the syntactic level in Algerian literary corpora. Its research likewise consists of theoretical and applied dimensions. Theoretically, it situates syntactic signification within modern linguistic analysis through the collection and evaluation of existing research, constructing a coherent theoretical perspective. Practically, it studies and analyzes various Algerian literary heritage corpora in light of its theoretical conclusions, relying on modern linguistic mechanisms and tools.

The team also traces semantic–syntactic studies in Algerian literary heritage by compiling, organizing, classifying, and analyzing their materials in accordance with appropriate research methodologies. Consequently, the analysis of Algerian literary corpora adopts a syntactic–semantic approach that integrates the traditional grammatical method with modern linguistic theories.

**The Fourth Team: Contextual Signification**
The fourth team addresses contextual signification in Algerian literary heritage across its various genres—poetry, prose, travel literature, the novel, the short story, and dramatic texts. It studies, examines, and analyzes these works through linguistic methodologies designed to elicit and uncover their semantic features.

If the word, as a linguistic unit, acquires meaning through its relationships with other words—by being placed within different linguistic contexts—then the sentence possesses an additional dimension: the structuring and arrangement of words into linguistic constructions bearing intellectual and epistemic weight, from which diverse contextual meanings emerge. Hence, the verbal organization of words and sentences in Algerian literary heritage texts requires systematic study grounded in modern linguistic approaches in order to reveal their contextual semantic dimensions.

Accordingly, the scientific activity of this team consists in the study and analysis of Algerian literary heritage corpora within their varied contexts and genres, employing linguistic mechanisms to highlight their contextual semantic value.
